Cunning – secretive- opportunity takers.
Teeth formidably strong.
Excellent hole makers,
With tails as long as long.
Mother rats, expand their broods,
A fact that is well known.
But did I ever really want
A rat family of my own?
Little did I re- a- lise,
When I feed the birds with seeds,
That Mrs Rat would come by one day,
And Say “That’s just what my family needs”.
And add to this a coal bin,
With plastic sacks for bedding;
Right next door to the seed tube.
You can see just where this is heading.
A neighbour, alarmed , knocked on my door.
A friendly ferret held he.
“Would I mind lending my coal bunker,
For his friend to catch her tea?”
In went the ferret,
And out Mrs Ratty fled.
She was too quick for the ferret,
As she headed for my shed.
Nothing more of the rat thought I.
This friend had got me out of a fix.
Until I moved my compost heap,
You’ve guessed it.
